A mindful home is all about intentionally creating a peaceful space that’ll enhance your overall wellbeing.
Whether you’re opting for a full home renovation or a décor refresh, use a mindful approach to help you be more consciously aware of your choices – avoiding stress, impulse purchasing or clutter.
Here are our top tips to help you get started.
1. Get organised
Mindful homes minimise clutter and distraction, helping to promote a sense of peace. Prioritise sorting away any items that don’t serve a purpose or bring you joy.
You could even list things on an online marketplace, such as eBay or Vinted, and make a bit of spare cash out of items you simply don’t need any more.
2. Be smart with your storage space
So you’ve decided which items you’re going to keep… but where to put them?
A minimalist style means maximising your storage space. Multifunctional furniture is often a top choice – think storage ottomans or under-bed storage. But consider mounting organisers to the backs of your doors or behind cabinet doors too, to really make room for the things that matter most.
3. Plump for quality over quantity
If you’re in decoration mode, chances are you’ll be dreaming of hitting the shops to buy new furnishings. After all, there’s always room for one more cushion…
Try to implement mindful spending here, only buying things you really need and will truly maximise. For example, that candle on sale might seem a bargain compared to a pricey dining table and chair set – but which one will last longer, and how often will you use it?
Mindful spending isn’t about restricting your spending altogether – it’s more about being aware of your spending. Take your time, don’t rush in and spend your hard-earned cash on items that’ll really make a difference.
4. Sidestep the trends
We’re all guilty of scrolling through social media to discover the latest trends. But, if you’re creating a mindful home, you’ll want to dig deep to make sure your décor reflects the personality of you and your loved ones.
Select your home décor thoughtfully and deliberately, making a feature out of items that evoke positive memories and bring you genuine happiness or calm.
5. Incorporate natural elements
Create spa-like serenity by bringing in touches of nature throughout your home décor. Materials like wood, stone or rattan are the obvious choices, but nature-inspired colour palettes can be equally effective. Don’t forget the benefits of adding houseplants to your rooms too.
Mindfulness also focuses on using sustainable, eco-friendly materials, to reduce impact on the environment.
6. Take comfort to the next level
Let’s set the scene. You’ve finished work for the weekend, you sink into a cosy armchair and drape a luxuriously soft throw over your knees all ready to relax for the evening. Sounds idyllic, right?
Comfort and simplicity can be key to creating a truly mindful home, so incorporate soft textiles and comfy furniture. Take this one step further by creating calming zones throughout the home, whether it’s a cosy corner of your living room or a full room dedicated to relaxation.
7. Give attention to all your senses
You want your home to look nice, but you can elevate your home’s atmosphere by paying attention to the textures, scents and sounds in each space too.
Mix and match fabrics and layer up your textures to create a space that doesn’t just look the part but feels cosy too. And, of course, don’t forget to add a reed diffuser or dot a few scented candles around your main living spaces to make sure your home smells divine.
8. Maximise natural light
There’s nothing like natural light to bring a sense of calm wellbeing to your space, so maximise this by painting certain walls white to reflect the light around the room. Carefully placed mirrors are also a great way to illuminate a space as they direct light to those darker corners.
If natural light isn’t an option for you, don’t worry – you can still create a warm, cosy ambiance through clever artificial lighting. While ceiling lights with bright bulbs illuminate rooms through the day, choose table lamps or floor lamps to bring a sense of calm to your space during the evening.
