‘Tis the season of giving, and many of us will be hitting the shops to buy the perfect presents for our loved ones – without draining our wallets.

According to Ipsos, 44% of Brits are worried about the cost of Christmas, so it’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to break the bank to create a festive season to remember.

Practicing mindful gifting can not only help you stick to a reasonable budget, but it will ensure your friends and family unwrap the most thoughtful gifts this Christmas. Choose presents they’ll treasure, and you’ll create a truly magical festive moment. Here are our top tips to get you started.

1. Give to bring joy, not to meet obligation

If gift hunting feels like ticking off a never-ending to-do list, try making it a treasure hunt for the people you love rather than a chore.

It’s easy to get caught up in the commercialism of Christmas, leading to impulse spending. Simply buying gifts for the sake of it can feel like a waste of time and money.

Instead, put time aside to shop for the people you really care about. Selecting gifts more intentionally will not only be more fun for you but will also show the recipient how truly valued they are.

2. Support their passions

While we all love candles, bath sets and foodie treats, mindful gifting puts the focus on choosing more personal gifts for the recipient.

It doesn’t have to cost the earth to show you care. Make a list of everyone you need to buy for, then write down their hobbies or passions. Is your friend a fitness fanatic, a keen theatre-goer or animal lover? Once you’ve jotted down their interests, get your thinking cap on to track down a present they’ll love!

If you do decide to opt for something like chocolates, why not select a brand you know they love or buy it from a place that means something to them (such as a chocolatier from their hometown).

3. Use the 4-gift rule

Stuck on what to buy? The 4-gift rule could be just what you need. It goes like this: buy something they want, need, will wear or read. Buying in this way gives structure to your gift-giving, avoiding buying piles of presents your loved ones won’t really use.

4. Buy according to your budget

Practicing mindful spending is a great way to reduce stress when shopping for gifts. It’s all about really considering your purchase before going ahead, which helps you to only buy presents that your loved ones will value.

It’s a good idea to set your budget to avoid overspending stress. Start by adding up how much money you have coming in, then take away any money you typically have going out each month to work out your monthly surplus. You’ll then be able to work out how much you can comfortably afford to spend on presents this year without feeling the squeeze – just make sure you stick to the budget!

There are loads of other handy hints to help you get started spending mindfully, but one of our favourites is following the 24-hour rule. With this one, set yourself the challenge to wait at least 24 hours before buying – this will stop you from rushing into an impulse purchase, giving you a bit of breathing room to decide.

5. Seek out unique gifts

Some of the most meaningful gift ideas can be found right on your doorstep. Instead of a Supermarket Sweep-style spree on the high street, why not hunt for unique presents in local shops or craft fairs? Yes, it’ll take a bit more time, but you’ll likely enjoy the present-buying experience far more!

6. Make experiences count

According to Eventbrite, over 78% of millennials prefer experiences over products. So, if you’re looking for thoughtful present ideas, focus on gifting experiences.

This doesn’t necessarily mean pricey gift vouchers, tickets or memberships. Creating your own experience coupons, such as inviting your gift-ee round for a homecooked meal or a woodland walk, will mean a lot without costing much.

7. Use your own tastes are inspiration

Share some of your personal interests, style choices and tastes this festive season by gifting friends and family some of your favourite things.

They’ll be touched to receive a copy of your favourite book, a framed poem or quote you’re inspired by or even a hamper filled with tasty snacks they might not have tried yet. Treat your loved ones to things you love and who knows, you might create a new shared favourite!

8. Add a personal touch to pre-loved purchases

While many of us shy away from second-hand presents – including regifting – there’s nothing wrong with seeking out pre-loved items to polish.

Craft and upcycle to bring personality to any gift. You’ll spend significantly less than buying the brand-new equivalent, but you’ll end up with a truly meaningful gift.

Not only is a pre-loved or vintage gift more unique, it’s also more sustainable as you’re giving the item a new lease of life!

You could also make your gift wrapping mean more by adding a heartfelt handwritten note to your gift. This will highlight the care and thought that has gone into choosing the present, making it even more special.

9. Shop sustainably

Mindfulness isn’t just about considering the cost and value of a purchase, but also its impact on the environment. Seek out sustainable gifts where possible, including purchases from local businesses or items made from recycled and ethical materials.

Plants and seeds, organic soaps or shampoo bars and keep cups are some of the most popular options. You should also keep an eye out for items made from sustainable materials, such as bamboo, reclaimed wood or cork.

10. Quality over quantity

Picture this: a single, well-chosen gift that they’ll really appreciate, versus a mountain of ‘meh’ presents. While you shouldn’t splurge over your budget, mindful gifting puts the focus on choosing quality items that will mean something to the recipient.

So, if you’re uhm-ing and ah-ing over whether to choose generic gifts on a 3 for 2 offer, or put the cash towards one memorable present instead, you know which route to go down.
